Imagine Waking Up In A Body Bag

A worker at the Glen Oaks Alzheimer's Special Care Center in Urbandale, Iowa pronounced a 66-year-old resident at had died. She was ill and had been in hospice care for a month. A nurse practitioner detected no pulse and declared the woman dead.

About 90 minutes later, after the woman had been transported to a funeral home inside a body bag, workers heard noises as they unzipped her and found her gasping for air. They called 911 and EMTs took her to the hospital, alive but unresponsive. Two days later, she was returned to hospice care and was ultimately confirmed dead. The Iowa Department of Inspection and Appeals determined that the facility "failed to provide adequate direction to ensure appropriate cares and services were provided" and fined them $10,000.
